Purpose of the Position:
The Accountant Analyst III, Financial Reporting plays a critical role in providing a high - level view and operational support accounting, reporting, and policy services to UAH stakeholders.
This position assists in managing UAH's complex accounting structure consisting of numerous funds, day-to-day accounting activities, and closing of accounting records.
This position is further responsible for preparation of financial reports and analysis, development and maintenance of financial systems, and development and implementation of financial policies.
Duties/Responsibilities • Provide advanced- level support to Director with the preparation and management of departmental financial and accounting paperwork.
Prepare, edit, and review information to be published in the University's financial statements in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), federal, state, and higher education reporting guidelines • Develop and establish procedures for the budget process and daily operations according to policies and procedures established by the university, college and outside governing agencies.
• Provides problem resolution, follow-up when necessary; to include guidance to units in the resolution of identified deficiencies in operations, record-keeping and/or competencies.
• Actively participates in Team meetings • Advise unit & department staff on financial matters as appropriate.
• Maintain organized file system, and ensure appropriate record-keeping of confidential information.
• Consult with senior leadership and unit directors on departmental shifts and trends associated with budget management to include operations, reconciliations, irregular and unusual transactions and problem resolutions on a timely basis.
• Coordinates various audit activities to ensure departmental compliance with federal, state, and other reporting standards.
• Prepare footnotes and annual audit schedules for external auditors • Provide answers and recommendations and proactively respond to questions about financial activity for the year • Prepares ad hoc reports and monthly reconciliations (including, but not limited to, bank reconciliations, prepaid insurance, and fixed assets) • Perform various detailed financial, planning, and analysis.
Analyzes and evaluate financial data, calculates and prepare projections, and explains variances on request to improve administrative decisions and impact university-wide policies and procedures • Prepare financial and statistical reports for budgetary purposes and compliance • Recommend strategies, policies and procedures, process improvements, and efficiencies as necessary • Reviews and/or prepares journal entries, deposits, and cash transfers for university transactions throughout the year as well as year-end audit adjustments and reclassifications to make sure financial transactions are recorded properly and are in compliance with GAAP, federal, state, and higher education reporting guidelines • Review prepared reports for errors or potential problems prior to release to external agencies or other University entities.
• Prepares bond payments, including booking the transactions to the general ledger.
Assists with the preparation of the bond offering document, and during a bond offering, obtains and provides data to be presented to the rating agencies • Provide financial and accounting training as needed • Reviews various system reports and works with OIT to resolve issues impacting the University's accounting system • Monitors the University's and its institutionally-related foundations' chart of accounts and establishes new FOAPAL elements within the Banner Finance system when needed • Serve as lead on special projects as assigned • Perform other duties as assigned Minimum Requirements: • Bachelor's degree in Accounting from an accredited post-secondary institution or a degree from an accredited post-secondary institution plus a CPA license • A minimum of five years progressively responsible financial management experience including accounting and financial reporting • Must have strong analytical, accounting, financial and budgetary skills with a strong attention to detail and accuracy • Must have proficient computer skills • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with various levels of University staff and officials • Must have excellent organizational and presentation skills • Experience in the interpretation, development, and implementation of complex policies, procedures, and rules relating to accounting and internal controls.
Desired Qualifications: • Extensive knowledge and experience in financial administration • Knowledge of and ability to use creative problem-solving techniques.
