Title: Library Media Specialist
Supervisor: Principal

Job Goals:
To provide for student and teacher access and utilization of a comprehensive library media skills and services which support the total school program.
Minimum Qualifications: Master’s degree from an accredited college or university and certification in library science.
Ability to meet suitability criteria for employment and/or certification/licensure under the Alabama Child Protection Act of 1999 and Act No.
2002-457.
Proficiency in oral and written communication skills.
Knowledge of content, curriculum, methods, materials, and equipment needed by different departments in the school setting; ability to evaluate equipment needs and stay current on available equipment.
Effective interpersonal skills, with an emphasis on communication and collaboration with a wide variety of people and groups.
Ability to apply knowledge of current research, technology, and theory to library facility.
Ability to use technology to communicate, to plan and provide instruction, to facilitate student learning, to manage data, and to produce/submit required reports, correspondence, and/or financial information.
Physical strength, mobility, dexterity, stamina, and acuity to perform job responsibilities.
Ability to be punctual and in regular attendance.

Performance Responsibilities and Essential Functions: Demonstrates support for the school system and its vision, goals, and priorities.
Plans, organizes, implements, and supervises the media program, collection, and staff of the school library media center.
Utilizes computer software programs, the Internet, and other technology to accomplish goals of the program.
Prepares and administers a library budget using standard accounting procedures.
Evaluates and selects a variety of materials and equipment based upon the curriculum, needs, and interests of the students, staff, and administration.
Performs and/or coordinates the ordering, cataloging, processing, and maintenance of media and equipment for circulation.
Maximizes library functions by actively recruiting, hiring, training, and supervising clerical help, student assistants, and volunteers.
Collaborates with teachers in planning and teaching lessons and presenting activities based around student needs and the requirements of the course; maintains good classroom behavior.
Establishes and maintains an accurate circulation system for media and equipment; maintains equipment and updates equipment as required.
Schedules use of equipment, materials, and space of the media center to provide maximum access for students and faculty.
Plans and provides information literacy skills instruction for students and staff; serves as a resource specialist to students and teachers.
Plans and provides literacy skills instruction for students and staff; utilizes and teaches the use of technology in locating information.
Works with staff to integrate information literacy skills within the curriculum.
Maintains accurate inventories and indexes of the library media center’s collection of materials and equipment utilizing library software.
Provides an environment conducive to inquiry research, study, and personal use by students and staff.
Promotes the school library media program and resources to students, staff, and community.
Involves students, staff, and community in planning and evaluating the library media program.
Participates in professional growth and development activities including staff meetings, conferences, and workshops as required or assigned.
Models and maintains high ethical standards Maintains confidentiality regarding school/workplace matters in accordance with state and federal law.
Demonstrates initiative in identifying opportunities for improvement in areas of responsibility.
Responds to inquiries and requests in a timely and positive manner.
Maintains and submits required reports, records, and correspondence in a timely and accurate manner.
Properly cares for equipment and material resources of the school system.
Adheres to school system rules, administrative procedures, local Board policies, and state, federal, and local laws.
Reports absences and takes leave in accordance with Board policies and procedures.
Performs any other job-related duties as assigned by Supervisor(s).
